Game overview

Darkest Dungeon is a gothic turn-based RPG with roguelike elements focused on the physical and psychological pressures of adventuring. Recruit a roster of heroes and send parties into forests, warrens, crypts and other dangerous locations surrounding your ancestral estate, where monsters are only part of the threat.

Manage heroes, stress and lasting consequences

Combat uses party positioning, class abilities and turn-based tactics, while the Affliction System tracks the mental strain placed on your heroes. Stress can lead to paranoia, fear, irrational behaviour and other effects that influence their performance. Between expeditions, surviving heroes can recover in the Hamlet while you manage treatment, equipment and preparation for future missions.

• Build parties from heroes with different classes and combat roles
• Manage stress, diseases, quirks and other lasting conditions
• Use camping skills to recover and prepare during longer expeditions
• Send stressed heroes to facilities such as the Tavern or Abbey
• Face permanent character death and other lasting campaign consequences

Procedural expeditions and campaign progression

Dungeon expeditions combine procedural layouts with changing enemies, curios and hazards. Individual missions vary, while your surviving roster, recovered resources and Hamlet development contribute to longer-term campaign progression. Losing an experienced hero can permanently change the options available for later expeditions.

The Crimson Court DLC

The Crimson Court adds a parallel campaign that develops alongside the main game. It introduces the Courtyard dungeon region, the Flagellant hero class, a new enemy faction, additional bosses and the Crimson Curse. The expansion also adds Districts for developing the Hamlet and new trinket sets for the hero roster.
